Jayda Given Name Meaning & History

GENDER: Feminine, USAGE: English (Modern), PRONOUNCED: JAY-də. A variant of JADA or JADE. Jade is an ornamental stone, a precious green stone. The English word jade (alternative spelling “jaid”) is derived from the Spanish “[h]ijada”, which means “stone of the colic”, first recorded in 1565.” There was a belief that when jade was placed on the stomach, it could cure colic in babies. Nephrite is derived from lapis nephriticus, the Latin version of the Spanish “ijada”. Jayda is a fancy respelling of Jada which comes from the Hebrew word “yadha” meaning ‘he knows, the knowing one.’ Jada is borne in the Bible as a male name in the first book of Chronicles in the Old Testament as the son of Onam. Since Jayda is predominately a female given name.

It could also be considered a fanciful spelling of the gemstone name Jade, thought to protect against intestinal or stomach complaints (the Spanish origin of the name translates to ‘stone of the bowels’). The ancient stone jade is also known for its properties in attracting love and/or money. We also wonder if the original Hebrew word yadha gave birth to the lingo “yadda, yadda” roughly translating into ‘you know the rest’ – since the original meaning is one of knowledge. In any case, Jayda has only come into use during the latter half of the 20th century.
