Caitlin Name Meaning & History

Caitlin is a very common female name in both English and Irish. It’s pronunciation vary a bit between the language as it is usually pronounced as KAYT-lin in English, but Irish usually pronounce it as KAHT-leen. It comes from Anglicized form of an older Irish name Caitlin, which is known as the Irish form of the Old French name Cateline. This name Cateline, it self originates from the the name Katherine. It actually originates from the Greek name Aikaterine. This chain of form changes is belived to be started with the earlier Greek name Hekaterine, derived from the goddess Hecate’s name from the mythology. After the rise of Christianity, the Greek word for “pure”, katharos, merged with this name, and turned into Latin name Katharina, and it ended up as with the changes we mentioned earlier. The name was probably made known to many people after the 4th-century, by semi-legendary saint and martyr Saint Catherine of Alexandria. After the crusades, her name and stories were carried to Western Europe. With this introduction, different spellings of the name turned very popular in Europe and England, and became common after Middle Ages. Some other famous historical figues that influenced the spread of the name are 14th-century mystic Catherine of Siena, and 16th-century French queen Catherine de’ Medici, Russian empresses Catherine the Great and three of the Henry VIII’s wifes; Catherine of Aragon, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr.
